March - Nico, our little Jirafito was born! He was born with a head-full of hair and was very mellow from the beginning. He hated his first bath at home... but seemed to be accepting of them after a while; And then a few weeks later he decided he loved baths and hasn't looked back. He gets the hiccups all the time (just like when he was still in my belly) and my dad calls him Sapito because of that.
April - From the beginning, Nico was always very strong, holding himself up while he was on tummy time. At one month, he started rolling over (tummy to back); he did it a couple of times and then stopped for a while. Matt started trying to give him a bottle and Nico seemed to take it pretty well. He loves books and likes stories being read to him.
May - Becoming SO much more expressing, smiling and laughing all the time. He loves color -- and seems fascinated by all the colors in aunt Mimi's painting. He likes toys that are dangled above him, and has actually started grabbing them and kinda playing with them. We were finally able to try out the Bob - Nico seemed to like it and it was nice to finally get a chance to go out on more walks. We took our first family trip - we went to the Oregon coast, Seaside, with Brooke & Mike.
June - Lots more of tummy time (actually enjoying it) and more rolling over. He would enjoy sitting on our laps while we play cards - a card shark in the making! Started doing some teething, sucking on his fingers a little bit. He got his first hair cut -- just a little trim, but still pretty exciting. He started being more fascinated by the dogs, and had some significant cuddle time with Eco. At the end of the month he started going to Liz's for day care and from the beginning he seemed to be taking it pretty well.
July - First time on a plane - and he did fantastically: he nursed, slept, chilled happily, and nursed some more. We went to San Diego to visit Matt's family and Nico got to meet his great Gram. He continues to love having books read to him, and his particular favorite is Giraffe & a Half (by Shel Silverstein); he will even stop nursing to listen to Matt read to him. We borrowed an exersaucer from Brooke & Mike and Nico got to try it for the first time and he absolutely loved it! He also started sitting up more, though he's not completely stable yet. Around this time though is when his eczema exploded - he had a lot of break outs and his poor face was always itchy. He started rolling over from back to tummy. He most definitely continues to love his bath time :)
August - He continues to do a lot of teething (lots of lip and finger chewing). As Nico gets older we keep trying to make an effort to go out and back into our "usual" routines. On one of our family date outings Nico sat on a restaurant high chair for the first time - he seemed confused by it a little bit, but once he figured it out he liked it. Had some bouts of mamitis aguditis. He tried a swing at the park and seemed to really enjoy it, though he was mostly pensive about it. We went to Boise to see family on our first trip without Matt. He tried a little bit of avocado; he wasn't sure what to make of it but after a few tries he seemed to like it a little bit.
September - Nico started trying solids and he loves peaches and sweet potatoes. We started the parent-child swim lessons at the YMCA, though he wasn't the biggest fan of them at first. He was featured in the front page of the UB on a story about the swim lessons. We switched his bottled to a soft-spout sippy cup - Nico likes it! His eczema seems to be getting a little bit better.
October - He is actually starting to enjoy swim classes. We went to Seattle for a Sounders game and not only was he a trooper with the long trip back and forth, but he enjoyed it and flirted with the other fans. Nico got his first two teeth - bottom & front! I decided to make and can applesauce and Nico is the biggest fan. He is a great eater in general, but he'll be occasionally picky about certain food. However, no matter how he's feeling he will always eat and enjoy applesauce. We got a trailer for Matt's bike and (even though it's still too big for him) we got him a helmet and he's all ready to go riding with dad. Our first Halloween together as a threesome - we had a little jirafito and his two zoo wranglers.
November - Nico started holding pens/pencils/crayons and created his first few masterpieces. During her visit, abuelita Margarita "accidentally" chopped off his hair. Without really holding on he started showing interest in sitting on his rocking giraffe... though he hasn't started rocking it yet. Seems to be enjoying pool time more and more and is starting to get more comfortable at doing back floats.
December - Nico continues to love books; he still likes been read too but he definitely loves pulling ALL of his books out of the shelf. Soon after my mom's visit he decided he was ready to crawl and once he started he didn't stop. Always the good eater he continues to love his food... and has decided he's definitely a pizza lover, especially pesto! We got Nico a training potty and he immediately took to it and inaugurated it on the first try. Mid-month we finally moved Nico upstairs to his room and he did fantastically from the beginning.
January - He loves his room: crawling all over the place, pulling all his toys out of their shelf every day and playing with his books. He also likes to pull out the cookbooks out of their shelves (I think that he's going to grow up to be a little cook or bakers like his dad). And speaking of food, as much as he likes the mushed up food that I prepare for him, he definitely loves to eat what's on mom & dad's plate better. He loves looking out the window all the time, and this month he saw snow for the first time and loved it.
February - Nico took his first trip out of the country: to Canada! We went to visit Niki & Ben and we got to mean Nico's cousin Ian. He continues to be an easy, happy baby even when he's been kinda sick. We've been going to a lot of Whitman basketball games and Nico loves all the action (both on the court and among the fans).
March - This first year with our little guy has absolutely flown by. It's been amazing to see how quickly he changes every day and how far he's come from that tiny little bundle that was first placed on my chest.
Since his birthday last month, Nico has started drinking cow's milk, even though he continues to nurse like a champ. He loves to eat... everything! Yogurt & applesauce always win, but he likes all the mushed up stuff I make him (cauliflower with tumeric, yams, sweet potatoes, carrots (though it took a while), green beans, spinach, pears, zucchini). He has eight chompers, four on the top, four on the bottom, all on the front. He's been slowly stumbling a few feet a time, and four days ago he started full-out walking and he hasn't stopped since. He has always liked being outside - walking, going in the stroller, riding with dad in the bike trailer, playing at the playground.
He is still a little guy (he was born in the 9th% and was just on the 12th% at his 1-year appointment) but he's always growing, always curious, always happy. He still likes books, but doesn't usually have the patience to listen to a whole story, unless you read to him while he's nursing or you're reading Trains or Trucks Go - those he definitely loves. He chats all the time, but hasn't actually said a word yet (other than mama, dada, tata). He sleeps fantastically, usually going to bed around 8:30pm and sleeping until 7am. When he wakes up he just chills while I get ready, turning on his mobile and just playing in his crib, talking to himself.
I am sure I'm forgetting a million things, but this is a start. And I'll be better at keeping track of all those little details as we go.
For now, he is constantly developing his personality. Growing into his own. He is stubborn (just like mom & dad combined). He is sweet (he gives open-mouthed kisses :) He is my little man & I can't believe he is 13 months old!
